Starting a new job can come with lots of different challenges, and deciding what to wear for your very first day can be one of the many things you have to take a few moments to think about. You want to make the right impression on people, you don’t want to come across as being too keen, and you definitely don’t want to end up feeling uncomfortable for your entire first day on the job. Here are some things you should consider in order to choose the perfect outfit for your first day at work.
- Find out what the dress code is
Some places don’t have a dress code at all, while others are very strict with it and require everybody to dress in the same uniform. This is something that you will be able to find out during your interview, and you’ll definitely notice during your interview if everybody seems to be wearing part of a strict dress code. If you’re not too sure, this is something that you can ask the interview panel, since for some people, what they can wear to work is a big issue. If you forgot to ask at your interview, you can always ring the company and ask about it. If you are offered the job, ask about it over the phone or at a face-to-face meeting. You can also check your new starter pack for any information about what to wear.
- What will you be doing at work?
Is the role largely consistent of meetings, periods of sitting down in meetings or at a computer, greeting customers and other sedentary tasks? If so, you won’t have to worry too much about what to wear, particularly if there is no uniform. Some companies ask that their employees dress smart casual, in which case you could wear items like chino pants. If you are asked to dress formally, you should go for black items and stay on the safe side for your first day at work. If you will be doing casual labour, you won’t be expected to dress formally or smart, but rather you will be required to dress as casually as possible. You will also be given other items you might need while on the job, such as a high-visibility jacket or any other protective clothes. If you are not sure what your first day is going to consist of, you can always contact the company beforehand to ask these questions.
- Are you going to be comfortable?
While making a great impression and following the required dress code, it’s very important that you make sure you are going to be comfortable. You don’t want to remember your first day at work as being very uncomfortable in what you were wearing. You should make sure that you are comfortable and that you are also followed all the necessary fashion and other rules that have been set out in your job description and in your starter pack.
